A government funding package will give the Indigenous leaders of New South Wales a $500 million grant to help their communities transition into full-time work.
Key points:The package is being funded by the Prime Minister’s Office and will be made available through the National Indigenous Leaders Council (NILOC)The grant will go towards the NILOC’s three-year Indigenous Leadership Initiative, which aims to provide a range of resources for leaders to work towards a more sustainable futureCommunity groups will receive a $50,000 grant to assist with recruitment, training and mentoring of Indigenous leadersThe NILC’s three year Indigenous Leadership initiative aims to help Indigenous people find jobs, start businesses and improve the lives of people who live and work in Indigenous communities.
“It is an exciting opportunity to support the leaders of Indigenous communities in their work to build a more vibrant and sustainable future,” Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie said.
“The NELCs Indigenous Leadership Fund will help communities achieve a positive transition from their traditional occupations into full employment, build up new industries and support the future of their communities.”
The NLLC is a non-government organisation that supports and assists Indigenous people in the management and management of their own communities.
It provides support to more than 600 communities across NSW, including many remote and remote-autonomous areas.
“As a result of the Government’s recent decision to allocate $500m of federal funding to assist the NLLCs Indigenous Leaders Initiative, NILCO will be able to provide Indigenous leaders with an extra $50 million in assistance to help transition into new employment and businesses,” Mr Bleijies office said in a statement.
“More importantly, it will provide Indigenous people with the tools they need to build their own businesses, while empowering their communities to lead more sustainable and equitable lives.”
It comes after a report released in December by the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development said more than 2,300 Indigenous people had been impacted by the death of their loved ones since 2009.
The report also found Indigenous communities were experiencing a “significant rise in mental health issues and violence”.
It also found the Indigenous community was more likely to experience mental health problems and to experience violence, including domestic violence.
In the report, the Indigenous Leadership Institute was also criticised for not including a section on suicide prevention and the lack of information on Indigenous suicide prevention strategies.
